Multiboxing, round 2

jak3676's picture

Probably pretty obvious that I've been getting pretty bored with the game lately.  Yeah, there's a new patch and that's pretty cool.  But it really struck me as just 1 more set of dungeons to go run to basically get right back where I was a few months ago.

T.L.D.R. - I've gotten pretty bored with WoW, so I'm going to focus on multiboxing for a while.

Toward the end of 3.08 I felt like I had really accomplished about all I wanted to do in the game.  We pretty much had all of Naxx (10 and 25-man) on farm.  OS was pretty easy and we eventually got EoE down too (10 man only).  I wrote the guide on ElitistJerks for how to raid as a Frost Mage.  Sure there were plenty of more hardmodes to do, and the list of achievements to get is pretty much endless.  But I had seen all the high-end content the game had to offer.  For the first time since I had started playing WoW, I felt like I had "beat the game".

3.1 came out and I was pretty excited to keep the momentum going.  It worked for a little while.  But our 25-mans quickly fizzled out completely and our 10-mans eventually hit a brick wall with the keepers.  (Although the progress this week looks very promising.)  Now 3.2 rolled out, and I feel like I'm back to farming heroics for badges again.

Yeah, I understand that's the way the game goes.  It's just not a step I was looking forward too.  I can tell I'm not the only one - how many people have left the guild lately?  How many are still here, but don't really bother to log on anymore?  I guess to some extent I did it too.  After basically being AFK for a week or two I officially posted on the Farstriders forum that I was leaving the progression threads and the tradecrafting threads unsupported.  I haven’t been back since.  I did update the “Raiding as a Frost Mage” thread I had on EJ for 3.2 changes, but I’ll be leaving that one unsupported as well.  (If anyone wants to take them over – it’s all yours.)  Still, this was probably a good thing.  My "Honey-do" list around the house had been piling up, and I think I needed a break.

But taking some time off did make me start looking around for something different, but I was missing WoW at the same time.

Well, I think I found it – multiboxing (MB)  If you read my blogs, this is something that I played with a bit before.  But now I think I want to do it much more seriously.  After spending days reading up on it at dual-boxing.com, I’ve decided to take the plunge.

Step 1 for me was buying a new PC.  My current rig handles WoW, even 25-man raiding, just fine – good frame rates with all the graphical bells and whistles turned all the way up at 1900x1200.  But as soon as I added 2 more chars I started having some issues.  Not so much that it was unplayable – but it did get annoying at times.  That and I want to run my own 5-man team for heroics and PvP – maybe even get them “raid capable” at some point.

A good quad core CPU (i7), 12GB of RAM, a very fast hard drive (2x RAIDed Raptors, 5x RAIDed “standard” hard drives, or a good SSD), and some good video cards (GTX 275+ / 4850x2 or higher) are pretty much required if you don’t want to lag out in Wintergrasp or any other big raids.  That makes for a pretty spendy PC – probably $1500, not counting monitor(s).  As much as this is something I want to get into – paying the big bucks before you really get into it doesn’t seem worth it.  It’s like parents who buy their kids a baby grand piano for lessons only to discover a year or two later that jr. doesn’t have any musical talent whatsoever.

So I went shopping for something cheaper.  Rather than spend lots of money on a single PC with multiple monitors hanging off it, my plan is to run 2 separate PCs at the same time.  Here’s what I have and what upgrades I’m still working on:

Rig1 – for running a single instance of WoW:

Core2Duo E6850 (Dual core 3.0GHz) – Need to upgrade from my current E6300

4GB RAM, DDR2

320GB 7200RPM hard drive for OS, swap file and programs

1TB 7200RPM hard drive for WoW and storage

NVidia 9600 GSO (384MB video RAM)

28” 1900x1200 monitor

Rig 2 – for running 4x “slave” accounts

Core2Quad Q6600 (Quad core 2.66GHz)

8GB RAM, DDR2 - Need to upgrade from current 4GB

500GB 7200RPM hard drive for OS, swap file and programs

32GB SSD for WoW – Need to purchase

NVidia 8800GT (512MB video RAM)

Twin 19” 1440x900 monitors (portrait mode, split screen) – Need to purchase 2nd one.

Rig 1 is what I have now – that’s been my gaming rig for about a year now.  Although I am still working with someone for the CPU upgrade ($50 on craigslist).  Rig2 I just bought off ebay the other day.  Check out Item #150364154381 if you want.  Kinda bummed that the auction ended late night on the 6th (Thursday) and they didn't ship the stuff until the 11th (Tuesday).  I was really hoping to have it to play with by this weekend, but I think it'll have to wait another week.  Oh well, I still need to replace the RAM with 8GB and order a cheap 32GB SSD before I'm totally set.  I looked at what it would take to upgrade my current PC or to go buy a new i7 rig.  It just didn't seem worth it when I could get 90% of what I wanted at 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

I also ordered 3 more copies of WoW (vanilla) and 1 more copy of the battlechest (included TBC upgrade) from ebay along with a few 60-day time cards.  I already have 2 accounts, one WOLK and one TBC.  This will actually give me a total of 6 accounts.  The plan is to have an entirely new 5-man team and 1 non-partied “helper”.  I’ll eventually drop the 6th account once I no longer need a non-partied booster.

The first 5-man team I’ll do will be for running instances and eventually heroics.

1xBE Paly (Prot-tank)

1xTauren Druid (Balance – DPS)

1x Troll Shaman (Elemental – DPS)

1x Orc Mage (Frost – DPS)  (I think Orcs can be mages, right?  If not, how about priests?)

1x Undead Priest (Disc – Heals)

(I’ll also RAF level a warlock and off-spec the priest for shadow in case I ever need to join a raid as fully synergized ranged DPS team that all stand in 1 spot and nuke the boss.  )

The 2nd group will be all Tauren Shaman team for some PvP fun.  I will level a DK (unholy tank) with this group in case I want to run some instances too.  Once I get past the level 60 RAF point I’ll alternate between the teams for rested exp.

No plans for Hunter, Rogue or Warrior, but I may just RAF one of each to 60 so I have one of every class in case something changes in the future.

I probably have another week until my 2nd PC and new copies of WoW arrive.  So I’ll spend this weekend shopping for tradecrafting mats and crafting some entry level gear for a plethora of new alts.  Once I get set up, I’ll ask to have my new main char in each group join the guild.  I don’t think you’ll see much of Magechick anymore unless she’s helping the new Hordlings or camped at the AH.

If anyone else is stalled in the level 1-60 range, give me a yell.  I plan on running lots of instances in that range in the next few months.

So now the question is – if Magechick isn’t going to be my “main” anymore, or at least not my main focus – how do I sign my posts?

You can always sign your posts jak3676.  We know who you are.  I've been doing some trial dual boxing as well.  Mainly because recruit a friend is the only way to power level these days.  I'd be interested in the in five boxing approach if it wasn't so damn expensive.

The joys of overclocking - maxxing out my PSU?

So my 2nd PC arrived and I've been playing around with getting everything set up.

TLDR - I now have 2 working PC's.  Just waiting on some more RAM to arrive and then I'll be set to start multiboxing again.

My 2nd PC is a used Gateway that I found on eBay for cheap.  But it's got a few issues - of course.  The main thing irking me is that the BIOS is completly uncustomisable - no options for overclocking at all.  The case is actually a real pain in the ass to work with as well.  Little/no airflow from front to back and lots of sharp edges on just about everything.  Been a while since I tried to do any serious work in a case that just isn't build for it I guess.  *sigh*

So I figured I'd try canibalizing parts between the two machines.  My original PC has a P965G motherboard.  I really like it, and the BIOS is actually fun to work with, but it does come with integrated graphics and it's original FSB capped out at 1066MHz with DDR2 at 800MHz.  So I'm kinda starting back a step.  But I took the Q6600 out of the gateway and dropped it into my P965G mobo.  I then swapped out my 9600GSO for the 8800GT.  When I did that I discovered that the 6-pin plug on my old 500watt power supply didn't fit the 8800GT.  It has one pin that's round instead of square.  So I swapped the 500 watt power supply from the Gatway as well.

I plugged this into my 28" WUXGA (1900x1200) monitor.  Everything booted up right away once I remembered to re-apply thermal paste to the heatsink and fan (HSF).  I played around a bit just to make sure that everything was working.  In terms of WoW performance, I couldn't tell a difference from my old C2D E6300 (dual core 1.86GHz) to the new C2Q Q6600 (quad core 2.40 GHz) and swapping the 9600 GSO to a 8800 GT.  But WoW isn't particularly CPU or GPU intensive, so I probably went from having just a little bit of overkill to a little bit more overkill.

So I started overclocking.  I'm not trying to get crazy, people have posted speeds over 4.0GHz with their Q6600 in the past, and even 3.2 or 3.4GHz oc are pretty common with sock HSF (I'm using the stock intel HSF).  I started at 3.0GHz and everything seemed fine.  I just let it post and then hopped into the BIOS to monitor core temps and fan speeds.  Instead of a "resting" temp of about 35 degrees C I had temps in the high 50's.  That seemed a bit high to me, but I wasn't particularly elegant with the actic 5.  So I went to start testing in windows - no luck.  The BIOS wasn't even detecting that I had two SATA drives plugged in.  I spend quite a while playing with the BIOS assuming I had messed up the SATA support somewhere - it was detecting my IDE DVD burner just fine.  Eventually I swapped out the SATA power cords from the PSU.  That worked.  So I got back to windows and started doing performance tests.  Everything was a lot better on the CPU tests so I thought I was good until I noticed that I was back to stock speeds on my CPU.  Hmmm...   So back to BIOS and sure enough I'd lost my settings there - I reset them back to a 3.0 GHz overclock.  But then it wouldn't recognize my hard drives again.  I went back and forth like this for a while.  I'm still not entirely sure what's going on.  The best I could get was 2.66GHz on the CPU and even then it only recognized 1 hard drive.  I've never had any interference between CPU overclocking and SATA drives before.  I made sure my RAM and PCI bus speeds were still at stock.  All I can think is that maybe I'm maxed out on my 500watt PSU.  Lets see - 8800GT (200 watts), Q6600 CPU (140watts), P965g mobo (integrated GFX disabled) - (50 watts?), 4x 1GB sticks of RAM @ 667 MHz (< 10 watts each), a 1TB seagate 7200 RPM HDD (20 watts), a 320GB 7200 HDD (20 watts), a 22x DVD burner (20 watts), assorted fans, keyboard and mouse.  Yeah, I'm pushing it I guess.  Bummer - back to stock speeds for now I guess.  I may have to start shopping for a 800 watt PSU somewhere.  In the mean time I just ordered 8GB of 800 MHz RAM with some lower latency (4-5-5-15).  I'd also like a pick up a cheap 32GB SSD at some point soon - but probably no hurry for that.

So after getting that PC where I was finally comfortable with it, I went back and started reassembling the gateway with the left over parts.  It now has its G33 mobo, my old E6300 CPU, 2GB of RAM (I'll put the 4GB I have from my rebuilt PC when the 8GB sticks arrrive), a 9600 GSO video card, 500 GB HDD, and DVD burner.  This is plugged into an old 22" Acer monitor @1680x1050.  Unlike my homebuild PC which is running on mostly stock drivers - the gateway wouldn't recognize anything.  I re-loaded Vista (32-bit), but still nothing.  I wouldn't even recognize the built in LAN card.  So after about an hour downloading drivers from Gateways website, I burned them to disk on my home-built PC and trandfered them over (very grateful at least the DVD burner was recognized and a CD-ROM drive).  A few hours later I had it at least 90% functional.  I still can't get any sound, and the DVD burner is working as read-only.  But it's at least a functional PC.  I ran it through a bunch of basic benchmark tests and boy does it seem slow.  I can't tell if it's just really poor drivers from Gateway, the Win7 vs Vista deal or if 2GB of RAM is already holding it back.  With basically that same hardware I used to get much better performance on my home-build rig.  :(  This morning it had 80 windowns updates to install, so it's working on that now.  If I can find a way to let windows "upgrade" from vista 32-bit to 64-bit I may just leave it with vista installed.  But if I end up having to pay to switch form 32-bit to 64-bit then I may as well toss Win7 (64-bit) on there as well.  I've already pre-ordered 1 copy of Win7.  Maybe if I get the family pack of Win7 when it comes out that will let me upgrade all my other PC's around the house.

I am a little torn now - the play had been to use both PC's at the same time (3 accounts on the quad core and 2 on the dual core).  But I may just try keeping all 5 on the quad core at the beginning - hook both monitors up to the 8800GT.  Until I get past the old world I shouldn't have a problem hardware wise.

I'll probably be tweaking the hardware for a few more days while waiting on more RAM.  In the mean time I should start playing with getting my wow folders and addons setup as well.  If this weekend looks to be quiet I may get started as early as this Saterday.  You only get 60 days worth of RAF bonus, so I don't really want to get started until I'm ready.

OK, got all the hardware set

OK, got all the hardware set up - well, mostly that is (see above).  I also have my folders symlinked and keyclone working.  (gonna start with all 5 accounts on 1 PC with 2 monitors)  Time to start up some trial accounts and see if it's actually working, and how the performance is.  With some luck I'll be up and going in a few hours.

Gonna start with Paly and 4x Shaman I think.  2nd group will be Paly, Mage, Druid, Shaman, and Priest.  I already have all but the Shaman at level 60 for the 2nd group.  So once I level up the first group I should have 2x teams to play :)

imo..

if you can.. do recruit a friend for the extra accounts. the 3x XP thing is reaaally nice if they're still doing that. from my dual boxing experience it was well worth it. if i actually played my two druids enough i could get to level 60 in about three days without trying too hard, it's amazing.
